Course Description

Keyboarding 2 Online is a full-semester, 3-unit course delivered online via the Internet, email, and special course software. To enter the course, you should have the ability to type 30 w.a.m. If you are successful, your minimum speed at end of course should be 40 w.a.m. accurately by touch. You will build keyboarding speed and accuracy, and you will produce mailable business letters, tables, reports, memos, and desktop published documents using Microsoft Word.

PrerequisitesAbility to type 30 words a minute, CAOT 1 with a grade of C or better, or basic keyboarding.

RecommendationsYou should enroll in CAOT 9 or CAOT 1 or you do not meet the requirements for CAOT 2.  If you simply wish to improve speed and accuracy, you should enroll in CAOT 9, Typewriting/Keyboarding Improvement.

Course Overview

Develops speed and accuracy on a microcomputer.  Keyboarding review, intermediate formatting, communications skills, and document production, using Microsoft Word. Required for CAOT Certificates and AA Degree.

Do I need to complete Keyboarding 1 before I can take Keyboarding 2?

No. If you can type at least 30 w.a.m. with accuracy, you can go on to Keyboarding 2. However, it is highly recommended that you take the full semester Keyboarding 1 class before Keyboarding 2 in order to learn the basics of formatting letters, tables, reports, and memos using Word 2007.

How an Online Course Works

How does an online course work? The following guidelines should help you:

1. All work is completed during the week when it works best for you. You set your own schedule and log on to the course Web page when it's best for you. There will be no required log-on times.

2. It is extremely important to keep up with the syllabus. All assignments are due on the dates indicated, and tests will only be available for certain periods of time.

3. A week in this class runs from Monday through Sunday. At the beginning of each week (each Monday), you should do the following:

     a. Log on to the course Web page.
     b. Click on the "Sessions" link.
     c. Click on the appropriate week.
     d. Read the lecture notes for the week.
     e. Read the homework assignments for the week.
(These assignments must be completed by the following Monday.)

During the week you should do the following:

     a. Check the homework assignments from the previous week for accuracy.
     b. Complete all homework assignments.
     c. Take any tests.
     d. Check your documents prior to email submission with the pdf copies of documents
         through the url:   http://www.caotlavc.com/pdf

4. You will use the following tools to communicate with me and with others in the class:

     a. E-Mail: To communicate with your instructor
     b. Web Conferencing Technology: By connecting to online group interactive meetings via CCC Confer, utilizing a PC, Internet and a telephone, instructions  forthcoming.

Success in this Course

Set a regular schedule for keyboarding and stick to it.  It is only through regular drilling an practice that you will achieve your speed and accuracy goals.

Allow at least three hours of extra lab time each week to practice and drill.  This extra time has been built into the assignments on the syllabus.

Begin using proper technique immediately.  Once you develop bad habits, they can become difficult to break.

Keep you eyes on the copy.  Looking at your hands and/or the screen will only slow you down and will prevent you from achieving your speed and accuracy goals.

Use correct posture and hand position-do NOT cross your legs while at the computer; do NOT let the palms of your hands touch the keyboard.  Following these simple procedures can prevent back strain, fatigue, and injury.

If you begin to feel tired or your eyes begin to feel strained, take a break, close your eyes, stretch, or get up and walk around.

Identify problem areas or keys and complete Skillbuilding Exercises which focus on them.

Please see your assignment sheet for for details.
Never take an actual document processing test on campus until you have successfully completed the practice document processing tests!
